Kevin Young was arrested Saturday after her was accused of defacing a Miami, Florida commissioner's electoral signs, news sources report. Young, 28, later explained that he had defaced the sign as a form of political protest. He was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of criminal mischief and was later released after posting a $1,000 bail bond. The press did not specify an attorney for Young.
According to reports, Young is a politically active member of the community and is a volunteer for a Miami mayoral candidate. Young became upset after a Miami commissioner, who is also running for mayor, made a comment on Facebook regarding the death of teenager Israel Hernandez. Hernandez, who went by the name "Reefa," was died after being Tasered by a Miami police officer during an arrest.
According to Young, who recently spoke to the press, "[The commissioner] was trying to capitalize on the death of the young man Israel Hernandez who went by the name of Reefa. It's a crime and a tragedy that a political campaign would use somebody's death as political capital." As alleged payback for the post, Young defaced several of the commissioner's campaign signs, writing the word "fraud" and "RIP Reefa" on the signs. "I did this because this is what I believe in, I believe in taking action," Young purportedly told reporters. It was unclear how many signs he vandalized.
