Jesse Hernandez of Coral Springs, Florida was arrested Monday after another driver accused him of pulling out a gun during a road rage incident near the University of Miami, news sources report. Hernandez, 27, was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of possession of marijuana and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The press did not say whether he qualified for bail. It is unclear whether Hernandez has hired an attorney.
According to reports, the incident began on U.S. 1 near the University of Miami sometime in the evening. While the details of what happened are unclear, reports say Hernandez and another driver, who was not identified in reports, were involved in a road rage confrontation. At some point, Hernandez allegedly revealed a gun and threatened the other driver.
After the confrontation, Hernandez reportedly abandoned his truck, fleeing on foot towards 57th Avenue and Levante Avenue. The University of Miami is reportedly near where Hernandez fled. The Red Road Commons apartment complex was completely locked down, with students not allowed to enter or exit, from around 8:30 p.m. until about 11:00 p.m. as police searched for Hernandez.
In addition to the locked-down complex, a warning was issued to the students saying that an armed man may be in the area, sources say. The warnings came in the form of emails, text messages, and tweets. "Basically, they said that there's an intruder that's armed and we should stay away from the area," one student reportedly said. "I got a text message and voice mail both saying that there was somebody potentially armed near us," another student was quoted as saying in the press.
Police dogs and helicopters canvassed the area looking for Hernandez as some students remained locked in or out of their homes. The search drew a blank, though police officers reportedly found Hernandez's white truck in the area. The police wrapped up the search around 11:00 that night; Red Road Commons residents were then able to come and go again, sources say. Campus was, however, protected by extra security that night.
