Neil Doherty, a former Miami, Florida priest, was accused Thursday of sexually abusing a child during his priesthood nearly 30 years ago, news sources indicate. The victim, now in his 40's, alleges that Doherty drugged and molested him when he was 15. Doherty remains at the Broward County Jail for an unrelated offense. So far, no legal charges have been pressed against Doherty regarding these new allegations. Reports indicate that more victims may come forward. It is not yet known whether Doherty has hired a lawyer.
Reports say the alleged abuse began in 1984 when the victim was 15 years old. At the time, Doherty was an anointed priest under the Miami, Florida Archdiocese. From 1984-1985, the victim periodically visited Doherty at his home at the Keystone Trailer Park in Miami-Dade County. During his visits, the victim alleges that Doherty had him ingest an unknown substance and then sexually molested him. This purported abuse happened again sporadically for 18 months, reports say.
The victim's lawsuit also states that Doherty abused a number of other children during his time as a priest in Miami. What is more, the lawsuit alleges that the abuse was covered up by the Archdiocese. "According to our lawsuit, the Archdiocese of Miami chose to protest themselves and Doherty instead of kids like Dennis," an attorney spokesperson said. So far, the Archdiocese of Miami has not issued a statement regarding the allegations, except to quote their regulations on such matters. It is unclear whether Doherty could be reached for comment.
Doherty was not the only Florida resident accused of child abuse recently. Thomas and Bianca Vacek, both Kissimmee, Florida high school teachers, were arrested Tuesday after a child accused Bianca of burning his face with a lighter, reports indicate. Bianca Vacek was booked into police custody on multiple charges, including aggravated child abuse. Thomas Vacek was also booked into police custody for failing to report the alleged abuse. It is unclear whether the defendants have qualified for bail or if they hired legal representation.
Reports say both suspects work as teachers at the Poinciana High School in Kissimmee, Florida. There is no indication that the pair ever ran into trouble or was accused of abusing students at the school. It remains to be seen whether they will be allowed to keep their jobs pending the outcome of the case.
