Guillermo Chacon of Miami-Dade County, Florida was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly stole nearly $50,000 from a little league football team, news sources report. Chacon was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of organized fraud, second-degree grand theft, and eight counts of uttering forged instruments. His bail bond was set at $12,500. It is unclear whether Chacon has obtained a l defense lawyer to represent his case.
According to reports, Chacon worked as a treasurer for the Miami-Dade Xtreme Youth Football League from as far back as early 2011. The league's funds come from a variety of sources, including sponsors. Chacon's duties with the league included managing the league's JPMorgan Chase bank account and the money therein. He was also required to show bank statements to the league at the end of each month to verify the account's current balance. Once the allegations of theft surfaced, the league terminated Chacon.
A league spokesperson commented on the alleged theft via a letter. "A theft report was immediately filed [following the discovery of the theft], and all accounts associated with Mr. Chacon were closed and new accounts have been opened," the letter stated. "Furthermore, Mr. Chacon has been suspended from his duties as treasurer subject to a formal removal hearing."
Reports say the alleged fraud began in August 2011 and lasted until December 2012. During that timeframe, Chacon allegedly withdrew cash from the football league's bank account on numerous occasions. To cover up the theft, sources say Chacon made fake monthly bank statements that made it appear that there was more money in the league's bank account than there actually was. In November 2012, Chacon reportedly submitted a monthly bank statement to the league that showed their bank account held $61,893.18, when in fact it only had a balance of $9,489.81.
