Edgar Fabian Navarrete of Miami, Florida was arrested Monday after he allegedly jokingly told TSA agents that his friend had a bomb in his luggage, news sources report. Navarrete, 43, was booked into the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of making a bomb threat. It is unclear whether he qualified for bail bond. The press did not say whether Navarrete had hired a lawyer.
According to reports, the incident occurred Monday at the Miami International Airport. Navarrete was at the airport with his friend, who he was dropping off for a flight. Information regarding the friend's identity was not provided in reports; he does not appear to have been charged with any wrongdoing.
TSA agents reportedly asked the pair of they had any liquids or other items that would be confiscated by security. Navarrete allegedly told the agents that his friend had a bomb as a joke. The agents, however, took the statement seriously and questioned the friend about the supposed bomb. Meanwhile, Navarrete purportedly headed home.
Apparently no explosives were discovered in the friend's possession, though it is unclear whether he made his flight. He was later released, but only after police obtained Navarrete's information, reports say. Police went to Navarrete's residence and placed him under arrest.
This was not the only joke bomb threat reported at the Miami International Airport this year. In April, Miami Beach resident James Bahamonde was apprehended after he allegedly joked with a bartender in the Delta Sky Club Bar at the Miami International Airport, saying there could possibly be an explosive device in his luggage, sources report. Bahamonde, 36, was taken to the Miami-Dade County Jail on charges of planting of a hoax bomb. An update on the case is not currently available.
