Miami, Florida detectives seized more than two tons of marijuana from a city seaport on Tuesday, news sources report. The marijuana reportedly arrived in a large shipping container from South America and is estimated to be worth about $4 million. Police are currently investigating the mysterious shipment; it is unclear whether they have any leads as to who was responsible for shipping the package or who was supposed to receive it. There have been no arrests thus far.
According to reports, agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection noticed a large container that showed signs of having been tampered with arriving at a Miami seaport. Detectives say the contained appeared to have originated somewhere in South America, but did not say where exactly. Detectives did not say whether they believe the large shipment of drugs originated from one of South America's cartels.
Suspicious, the investigators brought in a team of drug-sniffing dogs to inspect the container. Reports say the dogs were able to indicate that there were drugs inside the container. Going off of probable cause, detectives opened the contained and discovered 40 bags containing marijuana inside. All together, the bags weighed more than two tons, sources say.
A lab test later confirmed that the substance inside the container was, in fact, marijuana. Police are currently investigating the shipment. In all, the massive quantity of marijuana is worth around $4 million, sources say. It is unclear whether police have any leads. The unusually large amount of marijuana indicates that drug dealers arranged the shipment. The marijuana was probably meant for distribution throughout Florida and the rest of the United States.
A spokesperson for the CBP Miami Field Operations said finding this much marijuana in one shipment is unheard of. The spokesperson said the most he had seen detectives seize at once was around 3,800 pounds. The drug has been confiscated and will likely be kept for evidence or destroyed.
In other drug-related news, Timothy Garvin of Boynton Beach was arrested Sunday after police reportedly found a candy container containing drugs in his pocket, reports indicate. Garvin, 31, was booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of drug possession. His bail bond was set at $50,000. It is not yet known whether he has obtained a lawyer.
